A Season to Celebrate: Why Winter on Prince Edward Island Feels More Magical Than Ever
Things are starting to feel festive on PEI!
With the Charlottetown Christmas Festival (the largest in Atlantic Canada) in full swing, the downtown core is buzzing with holiday spirit!
Last weekend’s Victorian Christmas Market drew thousands to the streets, and ongoing events like the Mistletoe Market, Deck the Hall at Founders’ Food Hall & Market, Breakfast with Santa and Yuletide horse-and-wagon rides are keeping the spirit of the season going strong!
And it’s not just happening in the capital either!! All across the Island, communities are coming alive with holiday cheer. Summerside’s Yuletide Festival kicks off December 6, and the Island-wide Hot Chocolate Trail is warming hands (and hearts!) in the most delicious way.
Add in countless dinner theatres, musical performances, pop-up bars, craft markets, comedy shows, tree lightings – you name it, it’s happening somewhere on the Island this month.
It really is the most wonderful time of the year, and an incredible time to be on PEI.
The People Behind the Magic
None of this happens by chance. Behind every market, performance, experience and twinkling light display is a tremendous amount of work. Local operators, volunteers, event organizers, community groups, and tourism partners spend months planning these experiences so that both visitors and Islanders can enjoy a bustling, joy-filled holiday season.
Their efforts bring people to the Island at a time once considered “the off-season.” Hotels are filling up. Staff have more reliable hours. Restaurants, cafés, pubs, taxis, and small shops all benefit!.
If you were downtown last weekend, you saw the crowds at the Victorian Christmas Market and Maker’s Market, packed streets, long lineups, and smiling faces. That activity doesn’t just support artisans. It strengthens the whole community, from restaurants and bakeries to taxi drivers, hotel workers and more.

A Winter Season Full of Things to Do
Even after the decorations come down, the next few months are going to be packed with things to do!
Jack Frost Winterfest, Three Rivers’ Winterval, the Summerside’s Winter Warmth Festival, Charlottetown’s Winterdine Festival, and the PEI Beer Fest keep the Island buzzing right through the colder months. Each event brings winter magic to Islanders and attracts visitors to the Island!
Add world-class music and theatre, exciting sports events, and the shift from hiking and biking to snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and skiing, and the Island stays full of life all winter long.

This is excellent news for our Island for several reasons:
Why Winter Tourism Matters to Islanders
1 – Tourism helps keep Islanders active, engaged, and uplifted!
Tourism brings world-class arts, music, theatre, festivals, sporting events, and culinary experiences to Islanders. These events enrich our lives, keep us active, and create opportunities to connect across generations. They help us stay social, engaged, and uplifted, which is especially important during the darker winter months.
2 – Tourism supports and enhances everyday Island life.
Beyond the events and activities, Tourism enhances day-to-day life in subtle ways as well. Tourism generates revenue that supports libraries, theatres, parks, sports programs, senior programs, and cultural centres. It funds essential services like healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Every visitor dollar helps Islanders enjoy safer roads, greener spaces, and stronger community services.
3 – Tourism inspires innovation and opportunity.
Year-round tourism creates opportunity! It generates jobs, inspires new businesses, and encourages innovation. It helps young people stay on the Island and attracts skilled workers, such as doctors and healthcare specialists.
PEI is a Great Place to Be, All Year Long!
We want to extend a massive thank-you to the operators, organizers, volunteers, makers, performers, and Islanders who make PEI an incredible place to be in every season.
Every festival, event, and cultural experience strengthens our community and brings us closer together.
