June 29, 2024
Central Coastal Tourism and Tourism Cavendish Beach have joined forces with local individuals and businesses to present a plethora of activities extending well into the fall. This collaboration pays homage to Montgomery’s enduring legacy through special events and activities that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Highlights of the celebrations include:
- Live Art Events and Photography Exhibits: Enjoy live art inspired by Montgomery’s quotes and stunning photos by the PEI Photography Club, all drawing inspiration from her work.
- Theatrical Performances: Harmony House will present a show inspired by Montgomery’s poetry, and Carr’s Oyster Bar in Stanley Bridge will recount her connection to the sinking of the Marco Polo.
- Photo Tours and Workshops: Discover Montgomery’s talent as a photographer through exhibits of her photos. Participate in photo tours of her favorite spots with Ian Carter or cyanotype workshops with Julia Purcell.
- Children’s Programs: Kids can partake in activities at the MacPhail Homestead and the Lower Bedeque Schoolhouse, reflecting Montgomery’s experiences as a rural teacher.
- Floral Workshops and Garden Walks: Little Dutch Flowers offers flower arranging workshops, garden walks, and literary corners for journaling and reflection.
- Literary and Culinary Delights: Enjoy songs, stories, readings, and delicious cakes and teas at the PEI Preserve Company, the Barachois Inn, and the Bideford Parsonage.
“This milestone celebration is a wonderful opportunity to honour L. M. Montgomery’s incredible contributions to literature and highlight the cultural richness of Prince Edward Island,” said Darcy Butler, Executive Director of Tourism Cavendish Beach. “Montgomery loved and appreciated Prince Edward Island as it should be. We are so grateful for her courage, determination and passion that is so evident in all of her works. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating her legacy and exploring the beautiful island that inspired her timeless stories.”
These events were funded in part by the Government of Canada, the Province of Prince Edward Island, the Cavendish Destination Management Fund, and the Cavendish Resort Municipality with organizational support by the Central Coastal Tourism Partnership and Tourism Cavendish Beach.
