emerit is national training products developed by Tourism HR Canada. The Tourism Industry Association of PEI is the distributor of emerit products on PEI. Tourism HR Canada works hand-in-hand with industry, small businesses, education institutions, and large corporate enterprises, to develop the emerit line of skill training programs.
Training resources from emerit are available for many occupations such as Housekeeping Room Attendant, Front Desk Agent, Supervisor, Taxicab and Limousine Driver, Food & Beverage Server, and many more!
Training Resources may come in multiple or different versions:
- National Occupational Standards are manuals that describe the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to be considered competent in an occupation. The standards are set by the industry and are the basis for emerit training and certification programs.
- Printable Materials are occupation-specific, self-study guides used for training or to prepare for certification. They contain exercises, checklists and self-tests based on the National Occupational Standards for the occupation.
- Online courses are occupation-specific, self-directed training designed to be flexible. Training modules based on National Occupational Standards can be completed when it is convenient for the learner, from any computer with internet access. Online courses are available to learners for one year from the date of activation.

Bartender Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards. Industry leaders and bartenders from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
The experience requirements for Bartender Professional Certification consist of a minimum of 750 hours of work experience as a bartender, or 500 hours work experience if the candidate holds Emerit professional certification credentials as a banquet server or food and beverage server.
Successful candidates will earn the Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) designation.
Director of Housekeeping Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards. Industry leaders and directors of housekeeping from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
The experience requirements for Director of Housekeeping Professional Certification consist of a minimum of 750 hours of work experience as a director of housekeeping or similar role which demonstrates relevant experience. The performance evaluation consists of a structured interview requiring responses which demonstrate application of the National Occupational Standards.
Successful candidates will earn the Tourism Certified Manager (TCM) designation. The TCM designation must be renewed every three years.
The Event Manager Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards. Industry leaders and event managers from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
The Event Manager Professional Certification includes the National Occupational Standards (Version 3.0), practice exam, written exam, performance evaluation, and work history verification. Exam questions are based on the skills and knowledge included in the National Occupational Standards for Event Manager, and it is strongly recommended that candidates be familiar with the Standards to maximize their chance of success.
The experience requirements for Event Manager Professional Certification consist of a minimum of 4,000 hours (i.e., approximately two years) of volunteer or paid work experience within the last 5 years, in a role with the responsibility to plan, design, and produce events.
The performance evaluation consists of the submission of documentation for a current or recently managed event, followed by a structured interview with a qualified assessor.
Successful candidates will earn the Certified Tourism Manager (CTM) designation. The CTM designation must be renewed every three years.
Food and Beverage Server Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards. Industry leaders and food and beverage servers from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
Food and Beverage Server Professional Certification includes the National Occupational Standards (Version 4.0), Certification Prep Pack, written exam, and work history verification. Exam questions are based on the skills and knowledge included in the National Occupational Standards for Food and Beverage Server, and it is strongly recommended that candidates be familiar with the Standards to maximize their chance of success.
The experience requirements for Food and Beverage Server Professional Certification consist of a minimum of 750 hours of work experience as a food and beverage server, or 500 hours work experience if the candidate holds Emerit professional certification credentials as a banquet server or bartender.
Successful candidates will earn the Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) designation.
Freshwater Fishing Guide Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards. Industry leaders and freshwater fishing guides from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
Freshwater Fishing Guide Professional Certification includes the National Occupational Standards (Version 3.0), Certification Prep Pack, written exam, and work history verification. Exam questions are based on the skills and knowledge included in the National Occupational Standards for Freshwater Fishing Guide, and it is strongly recommended that candidates be familiar with the Standards to maximize their chance of success.
The experience requirements for Freshwater Fishing Guide Professional Certification consist of a minimum of 60 field days with fishing clients, or 40 field days with fishing clients and 20 days of related outdoor guiding. Candidates must also provide proof of completing standard first aid training and basic CPR training.
Successful candidates will earn the Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) designation.
Front Desk Agent Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards (version 5.0). Industry leaders and front desk agents from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
Front Desk Agent Professional Certification includes the National Occupational Standards, Certification Prep Pack, written exam, and work history verification. Exam questions are based on the skills and knowledge included in the National Occupational Standards for Front Desk Agent, and it is strongly recommended that candidates be familiar with the Standards to maximize their chance of success.
The experience requirements for Front Desk Agent Professional Certification consist of a minimum of 1,000 hours of work experience as a front desk agent.
Successful candidates will earn the Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) designation.
Heritage Interpreter Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards. Industry leaders and heritage interpreters from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
Heritage Interpreter Professional Certification includes the National Occupational Standards (Version 3.0), Certification Prep Pack, written exam, performance evaluation, and work history verification. Exam questions are based on the skills and knowledge included in the National Occupational Standards for Heritage Interpreter, and it is strongly recommended that candidates be familiar with the Standards to maximize their chance of success.
The experience requirements for Heritage Interpreter Professional Certification consist of a minimum of 1200 hours of work experience in the occupation. The performance evaluation consists of two parts: an assessment of a video of the candidate presenting an interpretation product, and an interview in which the candidate demonstrates their product development skills.
Successful candidates will earn the Tourism Certified Manager (TCM) designation.
Hotel General Manager Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards. Industry leaders and hotel general managers from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
Hotel General Manager Professional Certification includes the National Occupational Standards (Version 4.0), practice exam, written exam, performance evaluation, and work history verification. Exam questions are based on the skills and knowledge included in the National Occupational Standards for Hotel General Manager, and it is strongly recommended that candidates be familiar with the Standards to maximize their chance of success.
The experience requirements for Hotel General Manager Professional Certification consist of five years in the hospitality industry with a minimum of three years as a hotel general manager or similar role which demonstrates relevant experience. The performance evaluation consists of a structured interview requiring responses which demonstrate application of the National Occupational Standards.
Successful candidates will earn the Certified Hotel General Manager (CHGM) designation. The CHGM designation must be renewed every three years.

Hotel General Manager Professional Certification for CHA includes the National Occupational Standards (Version 4.0), performance evaluation, and work history verification.
Please note that this path is only for candidates who are already certified CHA with the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) For the work history verification, please upload your current CHA certificate received from AHLEI.
Successful candidates will earn the Certified Hotel General Manager (CHGM) designation. The CHGM designation must be renewed every three years.
Housekeeping Room Attendant Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards (version 5.0). The experience requirements for Housekeeping Room Attendant Professional Certification consist of a minimum of 750 hours of work experience as a housekeeping room attendant.
Successful candidates will earn the Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) designation.
Hunting Guide Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards. Industry leaders and hunting guides from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
Hunting Guide Professional Certification includes the National Occupational Standards (Version 3.0), Certification Prep Pack, written exam, and work history verification. Exam questions are based on the skills and knowledge included in the National Occupational Standards for Hunting Guide, and it is strongly recommended that candidates be familiar with the Standards to maximize their chance of success.
The experience requirements for Hunting Guide Professional Certification consist of a minimum of 60 field days with hunting clients, or 40 field days with bunting clients and 20 days of related outdoor guiding. Candidates must also provide proof of completion of a Canadian firearm safety program, standard first aid training, and basic CPR training.
Successful candidates will earn the Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) designation.
Line Cook Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards (version 4.0). Industry leaders and line cooks from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
Line Cook Professional Certification includes the National Occupational Standards, Certification Prep Pack, written exam, and work history verification. Exam questions are based on the skills and knowledge included in the National Occupational Standards for Line Cook, and it is strongly recommended that candidates be familiar with the Standards to maximize their chance of success.
The experience requirements for Line Cook Professional Certification consist of a minimum of 1,200 hours of work experience as a line cook.
Successful candidates will earn the Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) designation.
Reservation Sales Agent Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards. Industry leaders and reservation sales agents from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
Reservation Sales Agent Professional Certification includes the National Occupational Standards (Version 4.0), Certification Prep Pack, written exam, and work history verification. Exam questions are based on the skills and knowledge included in the National Occupational Standards for Reservation Sales Agents, and it is strongly recommended that candidates be familiar with the Standards to maximize their chance of success.
The experience requirements for Reservation Sales Agent Professional Certification consist of a minimum of 1,000 hours of work experience in the occupation.
Successful candidates will earn the Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) designation.
The Supervisor Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards. Industry leaders and supervisors from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
The Supervisor Professional Certification includes the National Occupational Standards (Version 4.0), practice exam, written exam, performance evaluation, and work history verification. Exam questions are based on the skills and knowledge included in the National Occupational Standards for Supervisor, and it is strongly recommended that candidates be familiar with the Standards to maximize their chance of success.
The experience requirements for the Supervisor Professional Certification consist of 3,000 hours of work experience in the tourism industry (1.5 year full time) with a minimum of 750 hours in a supervisory role (6 months full time). The performance evaluation consists of a structured interview requiring responses which demonstrate application of the National Occupational Standards.
Successful candidates will earn the Tourism Certified Supervisor (TCS) designation.
Taxicab and Limousine Driver Professional Certification from Emerit recognizes an individual’s competence in the occupation as measured against the National Occupational Standards. Industry leaders and taxicab and limousine drivers from across Canada assisted in the development and ratification of all Emerit training and certification products for the occupation.
Taxicab and Limousine Driver Professional Certification includes the National Occupational Standards (Version 2.0), Certification Prep Pack, written exam, and work history verification. Exam questions are based on the skills and knowledge included in the National Occupational Standards for Taxicab and Limousine Driver, and it is strongly recommended that candidates be familiar with the Standards to maximize their chance of success.
The experience requirements for Professional Certification consist of a minimum of six months or 600 hours of work experience in the occupation.
Successful candidates will earn the Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) designation.
Workplace Essentials eLearning from Emerit delivers the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for, and that new workers need to enter the workforce and enjoy a successful career in the Canadian tourism sector. Workplace Essentials eLearning content was developed in collaboration with tourism employers, professionals working in the sector, and human resources experts.
Emerit Workplace Essentials eLearning is divided into nineteen modules, covering Canadian workplace culture, communication skills, professionalism, customer service, thinking skills, and more. Learners can explore all modules in sequence, or choose modules that cover areas where their skills and knowledge may need improvement.
The Work-Ready All-Skills Exam includes 75 to 85 multiple-choice questions assessing competencies required across all front-line occupations as identified in the Work-Ready Competencies document, which is included with the purchase of the exam. Competencies include: Service - Professionalism - Collaboration - Communication - Compliance, Safety and Security.
Candidates who successfully pass this exam, obtain their Work-Ready credential.
