Why Work in Tourism?
Tourism is at the heart of life on Prince Edward Island.
Every year, 1.7 million visitors come to enjoy our beaches, culture, and world-famous food, generating around $520 million in visitor spending and $88 million in provincial sales taxes – funding essential services like healthcare, education, infrastructure, and public spaces.
The people who work in tourism are more than employees; they are the face of the Island, shaping experiences that keep visitors coming back. And the benefits of working in tourism go far beyond a paycheck.

Tips to Prepare for Job Fairs and Hiring Day
A little preparation can turn an introduction into a job offer! Here are some tactical tips to help you prepare for the upcoming hiring events:
1. Update Your Résumé
Include past work experiences, volunteer work, teamwork experience, interests, and soft skills. Ask a friend or family member to review it – a second set of eyes can make a big difference.
Don’t have a lot of work experience? Don’t worry! Many people get their start in tourism, and employers often value attitude, reliability, and enthusiasm just as much as experience.
2. Bring Multiple Copies of Your Résumé
You may meet several employers in one visit, so having extra copies shows that you’re prepared and professional.
3. Practice a Short Introduction
Be ready to share:
- Who you are
- What kind of work you’re looking for
- Why you would be a good employee
- When you’re available to work
A confident introduction helps you stand out and start meaningful conversations.
4. Dress to Impress
You don’t need formal business attire, just clean, neat clothing that shows you respect the opportunity.
5. Research Employers in Advance, But Stay Flexible
Check which employers will be at the job fair and make a list of the booths that interest you. Knowing who you’ll meet helps you prepare thoughtful questions and highlight why you’d be a strong fit for the role.
Even with a plan, be open to exploring unexpected opportunities – you never know when a surprising role might be the perfect fit!
6. Ask Thoughtful Questions
Consider questions such as:
- What does a typical day look like?
- Are there opportunities to return next season?
- How flexible are the schedules?
- What qualities make someone successful in this role?
Remember, a job fair is as much an opportunity for you to learn about employers as it is for them to learn about you. Show curiosity, ask questions, and leave with a clear understanding of what each role offers.
