PEI Celebrates National Tourism Week

Charlottetown, PEI – From April 7 to 11, Prince Edward Island joins the rest of the country in celebrating National Tourism Week 2025, a time to spotlight the incredible impact of tourism on our economy, communities, and Island way of life.

“Tourism is one of Prince Edward Island’s biggest exports, says Corryn Clemence, CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of Prince Edward Island (TIAPEI). “It remains one of the most resilient and impactful industries on the Island. It strengthens our economy, powers small businesses and supports 1 in 10 jobs on PEI. Tourism also contributes $88 million in provincial sales tax revenue, which funds essential services like healthcare, education, transit and infrastructure. Furthermore, it allows us to proudly share who we are with the world.”

In 2024, PEI’s tourism industry had a record-breaking year. Visitor spending hit $520.7 million, up 4% from 2023. Confederation Bridge traffic climbed 5%, Charlottetown Airport experienced its busiest year ever with a 2% increase, and cruise ship visits surged 21% beyond the previous high. Golf rounds, campground stays, food and beverage receipts and heritage site visits also hit new records. As well, Tourism PEI’s website traffic grew by 71%.

Remarkably, PEI has accomplished this while punching above its weight. Despite having a smaller marketing budget than other Atlantic Canadian provinces, PEI has led the region in growth and recovery since the COVID-19 pandemic. This success speaks to the strength of the Island’s tourism brand, the hard work of local operators, strategic marketing partnerships and the world-class experiences that keep visitors coming back.

Looking ahead, the outlook for 2025 is optimistic. Early reports from operators suggest strong bookings, especially from Canadian travelers. Domestic tourism continues to be a key driver, powered by national pride and a desire to explore destinations close to home. There is also strong interest from American visitors. The favourable exchange rate makes PEI an appealing and affordable destination, and there’s a real opportunity to show that the Island remains warm, welcoming, and open to all.

While there are always external factors to watch—like shifts in consumer confidence and broader economic trends—there’s strong momentum heading into the 2025 season. PEI’s strategy remains focused and consistent: continue investing in local and domestic markets, maintain visibility in the U.S., deliver authentic, high-value experiences, and ensure American visitors feel welcome on Prince Edward Island.

“Our strategy is clear,” adds Clemence. “We’re continuing to invest in our local and domestic markets while maintaining a strong presence in key U.S. markets. We must remind our American friends that they’ll always be welcomed here with open hearts. PEI may be small, but the impact of tourism here is anything but.”

During National Tourism Week, businesses and government buildings are invited to light up in green, and Islanders are encouraged to share their support on social media using #TourismWeekCanada2025, #TIAPEI, and #PoweredByTourism. Everyone is encouraged to thank a tourism operator and front-line employee who contributes to the success of the industry.

This week is more than a celebration of numbers—it’s a celebration of the people and passion behind the experiences that make Prince Edward Island shine.
